Any Hair Addict knows that the secret to having your best head of hair is making sure that your scalp and strands are both as healthy as possible. Unfortunately, making sure that your hair is in perfect condition can be quite the challenge. But, no matter what you've put your hair through (heat styling, coloring, etc.), these DIY masks are a brilliant and cost-effective way to restore your hair to health.

1. Banana Hair Mask

You'll need:
1 banana
1 tbsp olive oil
3 spoonfuls of mayonnaise

This mask is amazingly moisturizing, and super simple to make. The banana and olive oil are hydrating elements, while the protein from the mayonnaise strengthens your tresses. All you have to do is combine the ingredients, apply it to your dry hair (while paying special attention to the roots), leave the mask on your hair for 30 minutes, then wash it off. After one application, you'll have smoother strands that smell faintly of bananas. A win-win!

2. Avocado Hair Mask

You'll need:
1 avocado
1 egg
3 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp honey

This intense deep conditioning treatment is packed full of ingredients to boost your hair health. We've already talked about the merits of olive oil, and the honey and avocado amp up the moisture while sealing damaged ends. The egg is a fortifying agent, giving your hair more elasticity and resilience. You only need to keep this mask on for 15 minutes before feeling the results. Be sure to mix it well before applying, because you don't want massive chunks of avocado sitting on your head.

3. Strawberry Hair Mask

You'll need:
8 strawberries
2 tbsp mayonnaise

This mask also comes to us from Hairspray and High Heels, and is actually her favorite recipe. To make this mask, blend the ingredients together to form a nice cream, then apply it to wet hair. After 15 minutes, simply wash your hair as you normally would, then bask in the glory of your new shiny 'do.

4. Honey Hair Mask

You'll need:
2 parts melted coconut oil
2 parts honey
1 part apple cider vinegar

This hair mask makes a wonderful gift for fellow Hair Addicts, especially when you package it nicely. According to Mad in Crafts, the coconut oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties that promote scalp health in addition to crucial vitamins like vitamin E, vitamin K and iron. The apple cider vinegar is equally impressive in that it balances the pH of your hair, removes any buildup of dandruff or product on the scalp, and seals your cuticles. Just melt all the ingredients together in the microwave before application, then leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing.

5. Aloe Vera Hair Mask

You'll need:
2-4 aloe leaves

This mask is a little more labor intensive, but the results are totally worth it. The soothing properties of aloe improve scalp health while nourishing your locks. Depending on how long and thick your hair is, adjust the amount of leaves you need accordingly. The first time you try, the ratio might be a little off, but the next time you'll be better prepared.

To make this mask, simply scrape the jelly-like insides of the aloe leaves into a blender and puree them. Then, pour that through a strainer and separate out the liquid. After shampooing as normal, rub the jelly on your hair and leave it on for 15 minutes. You can then condition as you like and rinse everything out.

6. Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Mask
You'll need:
2 tbsp honey
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
2 eggs

We've already established that honey is a good hydrator for your hair and that eggs fortify your locks, and that the vinegar acts as a clarifying agent that eliminates greasiness. This is a good alternative for those who aren't fond of coconut oil but still want to try something similar to mask #4 on this list. Again, we urge you to use caution with the vinegar, however, as it may fry your hair if left on for longer than the suggested 20 minutes.

We love these DIY solutions to our hair problems, and we'd love to hear what you think of these masks. Have you tried any of these before, and if so, did they work for you? We're also eager to hear what other suggestions you might have for homemade hair masks. Do you have a recipe that you think is worth sharing?
