Guy Tang is one of the most popular stylists in LA, and he frequently sees DIY dye jobs come in to his salon for color correction.  We found a video of him performing a flawless color correction while revealing some excellent tips on mistakes you might be making when going silver.

1. Get it done professionally!

For our pro-sumers readers out there, silver hair is unlike other dye jobs.  There are many steps involved to do it properly and safely, and your local stylist is professionally trained to keep you and your hair looking and feeling great for the long run.  Even if you've done it yourself before, it might not be a bad idea to check in with a professional just to make sure you haven't missed anything.

2. Make sure to start with a blank canvas.

Guy starts out noticing some regrowth revealing heavy color banding.

His fix? Applying lightener to just the roots of her hair in layers. Time-consuming? Yes. Worth it? See for yourself.

3. Apply a darker shade at the roots for that extra "shadow root" effect.

Silver hair, like most other material-based colors, is about playing with light to make hair acquire a texture and appearance that is quite unlike normal hair.  For metallic colors, like silver, this can mean creating the effect of reflectance by painting on darker and lighter regions.

4. Use longer foils to get maximum coverage.

Short foils can be limiting when you're trying an intense color job like silver.  Make sure to have the foils you need to get the coverage you want.

5. Don't leave the room during the pre-lightening stage.

Fashion colors (like silver) usually require a pre-lightening stage.  Guy never leaves the room during this period to make sure that he can watch his clients' hair respond to the products and ensure that nothing over-processes.

6. Beautiful hair starts with healthy hair.

Remember, hair color can only go so far to make your hair look good.  Beautiful hair, no matter the color, starts and ends with healthy hair.  Take care of your hair, and make sure to treat your salon visits like doctors visits for your hair.  Even if you feel compelled to do-it-yourself once in a while, it's always good to check in with your stylist to make sure you're not embarking on a project that might harm your hair.
