By now, you're probably familiar with the undercut. Sometimes it's plain, or there is a slight pattern. However, stylists are producing masterpieces called "Hair Tattoos" and it's a trend that is revolutionizing the undercut.

Let's take a moment's respite to pay homage to the basic undercut.

A fashion trend that was dominated by men's haircuts for some time, the undercut originally began as a more practical alternative to sideburns for men who frequently engaged in athletic activities.  More recently, the style has been adopted as an avant-garde fashion statement by women all over the world.

Of course, when it comes to women's style, iteration and experimentation by those venturing to the frontier of what could be the next big trend almost inevitable results in the creation of wonderful new ideas.

In the case of undercuts, while men may have been satisfied with the mere absence of sideburns, women viewed these buzzcut regions as blank canvases awaiting adornment.

And so the undercut began seeing flourishes, oftentimes used as an accent piece to an already bold hair statement.  Not simply following the basic buzzcut-fringe appearance, undercuts began their evolution as a piece of design in and of itself.

But that wasn't enough for hair fashionistas craving something more intense.  The designs became increasingly complicated, demanding and drawing attention to their presence in and of their own right.

As these ornate undercuts began to take shape, terms like "hair graphics" and "free-style carving" began to arise amongst the stylists specializing in these hairstyles.

Now, the concept of "hair tattoos" has entered the lexicon, giving rise to increasingly intricate designs and, most recently, color.

Whether they are hearts, or meaningful shapes, or even leopard print, hair tattoos are increasingly becoming the outlet of choice for expression amongst undercut fans.

Of course, this trend has come full circle, finding its way right back to men's hair.  However, as usual, men always find a way to mess things up a bit.

What do you think, Hair Addicts?  Are these hair tattoo devotees having you give undercuts more consideration, or is this a fashion faux pas that you hope never makes it too far from the stylists who created it?
